NY Daily News: Britney Spears may lip-sync her way through two-year Las Vegas gig: Sources
There's talk that Britney Spears won't actually be singing during her shows at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.
Britney Spears may be taking fans for a ride when she kicks off her residency in Las Vegas at the end of the year.
The pop star announced on ABC’s “Good Morning America” last week that she’ll do a two-year stint at Sin City’s Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino, starting Dec. 27.
But sources tell us it’s possible that Spears, 31, may be phoning in the “Britney: Piece of Me” shows, in which she plans on performing 21 of her greatest hits over about 90 minutes.
“Britney does not sing. She is being paid a lot of money to lip-sync,” says the source. “Her fans are none the wiser, but it is disingenuous of her to take their cash and not deliver a proper performance.”
This isn’t the first time the “Toxic” singer has been accused of lip-syncing. Reports surfaced this year that the star is not even singing in the recording studio.
In 2009, fans stormed out of her “Circus” tour in Australia and demanded their money back because of disappointment over her lip-syncing.
“I’m going to definitely do the greatest hits, but I’m going to have to put some of my new material in it to just keep it fresh,” Spears said on what appeared to be a well-rehearsed interview on “GMA” last Tuesday about the upcoming Las Vegas shows.
She has confirmed 16 dates, but will perform 50 shows in 2014 and 2015. Industry insiders estimate Spears will take home a cool $15 million per year for the work. Tickets are priced between $59 and $179.
“She hasn’t sung live for a couple of years,” says our source. “If the crowd thinks they are being cheated then there is likely to be an uproar, but then again look at the success of Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson shows. The performers in that production don’t sing live, and it has been a runaway success.”
Spears’ shows will take place in a 4,600-capacity theater that will have a nightclub vibe, including a dance floor and bottle service.
A rep for Spears said, “Britney will be singing. As stated before, she is in vocal training —has been for months.”
