Hey, Y’all! Britney Spears Music Scares Off Somali Pirates!
Singer Britney Spears probably doesn’t know her music saves tankers from Somali pirate raids off the coast of Africa.
Merchant Navy Officer Rachel Owens, who works on supertankers as security, told Metro.com that Spears’ hits like “Baby One More Time” and “Oops! I Did It Again” are blasted out to deter kidnap attacks because “pirates would hate them most.”
Owens added, “These guys can’t stand Western culture or music, making Britney’s hits perfect. It’s so effective the ship’s security rarely needs to resort to firing guns.”
Steven Jones, of the Security Association for the Maritime Industry, said, “Pirates will go to any lengths to avoid or try to overcome the music.” He joked, “I’d imagine using Justin Bieber would be against the Geneva Convention.”
In 2011, there were 176 bandit attacks off the Horn of Africa. A real-life incident was recently dramatized in the Tom Hanks movie "Captain Phillips."
